This scale gives the feeling of melancholy and sad melodies. So what does it look like:-
The A Natural Minor Scale has the notes –
Root, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, Octave.
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A.
In terms of semi-tones from the root note (A) you get
A – B = 2 semitones (same as the major scale)
A – C = 3 semitones (one less than the major scale)
A – D = 5 semitones (same as the major scale)
A – E = 7 semitones (same as the major scale)
A – F = 8 semitones (one less than the major scale)
A – G = 10 semitones (one less than the major scale)
The notes that are a semi tone less than the major scale give the scale its sadder sound. Building chords on these notes gives 3 Minor chords and if you use them more than the other chords that reinforces the mood of the scale. The Minor chords are:-
A Minor (Root chord)
D Minor (4th chord)
E Minor (5th chord)
By then using melodies that are centred around the notes C, F and G you will get even sadder melodies. Using them with the A (root note) will make the mood even stronger. Enjoy.
